White Discharge (Leucorrhoea): What’s Normal and How Ayurveda Helps
In this article
Some vaginal discharge is completely normal. It keeps the vagina clean and healthy, and its amount and texture change naturally through the menstrual cycle, during pregnancy and with hormonal changes. In Ayurveda, excessive white discharge is called Shweta Pradara and is linked to Kapha imbalance and weak digestion.
What Normal Discharge Looks Like
Normal discharge is clear or milky white, thin or slightly sticky, and has little or no smell. It may increase around ovulation, before a period, during pregnancy and with sexual arousal.
Signs That Need a Doctor
- Itching, burning or soreness
- A strong or fishy smell
- Yellow, green or grey discharge, or thick “cottage cheese” discharge
- Discharge with blood outside your period, pelvic pain or fever
- Any unusual discharge during pregnancy
These can signal a yeast infection, bacterial vaginosis or a sexually transmitted infection, which need proper diagnosis and treatment.
Supportive Ayurvedic Care
- Diet: reduce sugar, refined flour and fried food; include fresh buttermilk, seasonal fruits and vegetables, and plenty of water.
- Traditional foods: ripe bananas and amla (Indian gooseberry) are traditionally used — for example, a little amla powder with honey.
- Digestion: eat freshly cooked meals at regular times, and avoid heavy late dinners.
- Herbs: classical herbs such as Ashoka, Lodhra and Safed musli are used in Ayurvedic practice; take them only when prescribed by a qualified practitioner.
Everyday Hygiene
- Wear breathable cotton underwear and change out of damp clothes quickly.
- Wash the outer area with plain water; avoid douching, scented soaps and intimate washes.
- Wipe from front to back after using the toilet.
