Ayurvedic Care for Recurrent UTI & Cystitis

Ayurvedic care for burning urine, cystitis and repeated urinary infections — calming Pitta and strengthening the urinary channels.

Mutravaha Srotas are the channels that form, store and carry urine, rooted in the bladder (Basti) and the kidneys. Ayurveda groups painful, burning or difficult urination under Mutrakrichha, and describes types caused by each dosha — burning and heat with Pitta, heaviness and mucus with Kapha, and pain with scanty flow with Vata.

Recurrent urinary problems are common, especially in women, people with diabetes and older adults. Ayurveda looks beyond the bladder to digestion, hydration, bowel habits and the body’s overall heat and resilience.

Urinary conditions we treat

Cystitis Pittaja Mutrakrichha

Cystitis is inflammation of the bladder, causing burning, frequent and urgent urination and lower-abdominal discomfort — sometimes even without an infection. Ayurveda sees mainly aggravated Pitta in the urinary channels. Care focuses on cooling, soothing food and drinks, generous water intake, avoiding hot, spicy, sour and fermented food, alcohol and excess tea or coffee, and not holding back the urge to urinate.

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) Mutrakrichha

Urinary tract infections cause burning, frequency, cloudy or strong-smelling urine and sometimes fever. When they keep returning, Ayurveda looks at the soil as well as the seed: low water intake, constipation, raised blood sugar, excess heat in the body and weak immunity. Alongside the treatment your doctor prescribes for an active infection, Ayurvedic care aims to reduce recurrences through diet, hydration, bowel regularity and daily habits.

Causes according to Ayurveda

  • Drinking too little water, especially in hot weather or with heavy exertion
  • Holding back the urge to urinate (Mutra Vega Dharana)
  • Hot, spicy, sour, fermented and very salty food; alcohol

  • Uncontrolled blood sugar (Prameha)
  • Hormonal changes after menopause and certain hygiene habits

Frequently asked questions

Why do my urinary infections keep coming back?

Common reasons include drinking too little water, holding urine for long, constipation, uncontrolled blood sugar, hormonal changes after menopause and certain hygiene habits. Ayurveda also looks at excess Pitta from hot, spicy and sour food and at weak overall immunity. Finding your own pattern is the first step.

Do I still need antibiotics for a UTI?

An active bacterial infection often needs antibiotics, especially with fever, back pain, pregnancy or in men and children. Ayurvedic diet and lifestyle care is aimed at reducing recurrences and easing discomfort, alongside your doctor’s treatment.

What should I drink if I have burning urine?

Plenty of plain water through the day is the basic step. Ayurveda also favours cooling drinks such as coriander-seed water and tender coconut water, while limiting tea, coffee, alcohol and very spicy food. If you have kidney or heart disease, follow your doctor’s fluid advice.
