BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. It is not suitable for children, pregnant women or highly muscular athletes.
What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a screening measure calculated as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in metres. It estimates whether your weight is in a healthy range for your height.
What is a healthy BMI for Indians?
The WHO classifies 18.5–24.9 as a healthy BMI. For Asian Indian adults, Indian consensus guidelines use lower cut-offs: 23–24.9 is considered overweight and 25 or above obese, because health risks rise at a lower BMI.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
No. BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat or show where fat is stored. Athletes, older adults, pregnant women and children need other assessments. Waist circumference and a clinical assessment give a fuller picture.
How does Ayurveda view body weight?
Ayurveda describes excess body fat as Sthaulya and under-nourishment as Karshya. Rather than a number alone, it considers digestion (agni), constitution and lifestyle to restore balance.
