Premature Greying of Hair: Causes and Ayurvedic Care
In this article
Grey hair before your mid-twenties is called premature greying. It is increasingly common, and while genetics often play the biggest role, diet, stress and certain health conditions can contribute too.
Why Hair Turns Grey Early
- Genetics: if your parents greyed early, you are more likely to as well.
- Nutritional deficiencies: low vitamin B12, iron, copper or protein.
- Thyroid disorders and some autoimmune conditions.
- Chronic stress, smoking and poor sleep.
In Ayurveda, premature greying (Palitya) is linked to excess Pitta — heat in the body from spicy and fried food, anger, stress and late nights.
Ayurvedic Care for Healthy Hair
- Amla rinse: dissolve amla (Indian gooseberry) powder in water, add a little lemon juice, and use it to rinse your hair a few times a week.
- Curry leaves: eat a few fresh leaves daily, or simmer a handful in coconut oil, cool, strain and massage into the scalp.
- Bhringraj oil: a classical hair oil for scalp massage once or twice a week.
- Cooling, nourishing diet: green leafy vegetables, sesame seeds, amla, dates, dairy or pulses for protein, and less fried, spicy and processed food.
- Calm the mind: regular sleep, pranayama and a relaxing ghee foot massage at bedtime help balance Pitta.
Realistic Expectations
Hair that has turned grey because of genetics rarely regains its colour. Greying linked to a deficiency, thyroid problem or stress may slow down — and sometimes improve — once the cause is corrected. Be cautious of products that promise to turn grey hair black.
Tests to Consider
If you are greying early, especially with tiredness, hair fall or other symptoms, ask your doctor about checking vitamin B12, iron (ferritin) and thyroid levels. See a doctor promptly if you notice white patches on the skin as well as the hair.
